THE ABERDEEN ANGUS BREED

The Aberdeen Angus breed (or Angus as it is known internationally) was developed in the early part of the 19th Century from the polled and predominantly black cattle of North east Scotland known locally as "doddies" and "hummlies". As with other breeds of cattle and sheep in Britain, establishment followed improvements in husbandry and transport. The earliest families trace back to the middle of the eighteenth century but it was much later that the Herd Book (1862) and the Society (1879) were founded. The early history of the breed is the history of its breeders, progressive lairds and farmers, of whom three were outstanding.

THE SIMMENTALER BREED

As is the case with Angus, Hereford, Brahman, Holstein and Jersey and many others, we believe Simmentaler must also have unique colour characteristics. The Association’s constitution compels us to protect the phenotypical purity of the breed and this is monitored by our compulsory inspection system. By the way, Simbra are registered in their own autonomous herdbook and their breed standard differs from that of Simmentaler.

The Boer Goat, as a South African land race, has been phenomenally successful as a registered small stock breed. Thanks to dedicated producers here in its home country who have rigorously applied selective breeding practices over almost a century, the Boer Goat is now found in almost every country across the world. It is here in South Africa where the very best genetics in the world are sourced and where breed standards are determined.

THE MERINO BREED

Merino, breed of fine-wool sheep originating in Spain; it was known as early as the 12th century and may have been a Moorish importation. It was particularly well adapted to semiarid climates and to nomadic pasturing. The breed has become prominent in many countries worldwide. Merinos vary considerably in size, conformation, and extent of skin folds, but the prevailing trend in breeding is to develop sheep of medium size, with fair mutton conformation and a minimum of skin folds. The colour of their faces and legs is white.

BALWEN WELSH MOUNTAIN EWE BREED

Balwen Welsh Mountain sheep originate in one small area of Wales – the Tywi valley. This area was hit badly by the very severe British winter of 1946-1947, and the breed was nearly wiped out – only one ram was amongst the survivors. All modern Balwen sheep are therefore presumably descended from this one ram, although it is possible that some of the ewes may have been in lamb to rams that did not survive the winter.
